I finally took the time to finish an old side project of mine that I started back in february last year. The purpose was to try and improve my skills in hard surface rigging, since that still was something I hadn't really done before.
So last week I picked up the project again, creating some textures for my robot and a quick animation to show off the rig.
I got stuck with this idea of a spinning head, taking inspiration from a bottle screw cap. If the robot looks left, the head will be low, and if he looks right, it will be higher as if he stretches his neck. I gave it a modular back pack system, with the idea that he can pick up multiple backpacks at once. Maybe he could be a delivery bot, putting payments in his little box, and so on. As you can see my imagination for this guy went all out, making this a very fun project to work on.
The most challanging parts were to rig the pistons for both the wings and the engine flaps, also to get the cables to fold correctly. But at the end of the day, I would say I achived my goal. I feel much more comfortable doing hard surface rigging, and I also managed to create another character that I'm very proud of. Hope you like it!
